Housebuilder Mathew Carpenter gives his views on today's budget. "With Phillip Hammond holding up the red briefcase for this first time in his career, I have to say we were hoping for a more positive outcome after some of the optimism that came after the White Paper. The housing marketing was neglected somewhat, and no mention was made of stamp duty amendments. What still needs addressing is the quicker release of land and simpler planning processes to speed up housebuilding from the offset. One positive we can take from this budget however is the pledge to spend £500m a year on technical education courses, which will help to tackle the skills shortage we are currently facing."
