Collingwood Meadow also pays homage to one of
Benenden’s most admired spectacles of nature by
taking its name from past resident, Collingwood
Ingram. This ornithologist turned horticulturist
single-handedly saved many species of Japanese
cherry by bringing back the scions and seeds of
over 100 varieties, cultivating them in his Benenden
garden at a time when many of Japan’s native
examples were bordering extinction. Some of
Ingram’s cherry trees still thrive in the garden of his
former home, The Grange, and the annual blossom
display remains revered by locals.
